A Descriptive Study of English Subtitle Translation of the Film Chibi

1. Studies on the Descriptive Translation Theory
Since early 20th century, translation studies gradually broke away from the marginal status within other related disciplines and established itself as an empirical science. From then on, schools of thoughts have kept coming out and each claims its legitimacy for e*istence. Among these schools is Descriptive Translation Study (DTS).

t is based on objective description, and carries on natural observation and analysis for translation phenomena and behavior, which must be generated under spontaneous circumstance, without the influence and effect of the investigators. That is to say, the investigators do not manipulate background, do not have any default, do not bring up any restriction to the result, but to describe and analyze all kinds of translation phenomena and behaviors under spontaneous circumstances. 2. Introduction of the Film Chibi
Chibi is a Chinese epic film, based on the "Battle of Chibi" and events during the end of the Han Dynasty and immediately prior to the period of the Three Kingdoms in ancient China. This film uses primarily the historical record Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms as a blueprint for the Battle of Chibi.
The movie tells the story of this famous battle in a very vivid way. In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minister Cao Cao convinced the fickle Emperor kingdoms of Shu in the west and Wu in the south, thus starting a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Shu and Wu formed an alliance, Numerous battled of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battles of Chibi. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and Cao Cao suffered a crushing defeat, which resulted in the formation of tripartite confrontation of three kingdoms. It is largely due to this war that the course of Chinese history was dramatically changed.
3. Studies on the Subtitle Translation of the film Chibi
