A STYLISTIC ANALYSIS AND COMPARISON OF SPEECHES DELIVERED BY
OBAMA AND HU JINTAO
1. Introduction
1.1 Background of the present study
“Stylistics is the study and interpretation of te*ts from a linguistic perspective. As a discipline it links literary criticism and linguistics, but has no autonomous domain of its own.” (From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stylistics_ (linguistics)) The mission of Stylistics is to observe and describe some main characteristics of the style of language, that is the characteristics of the pronunciation, the vocabulary, the synta*, and the te*t, and the purpose is to enable the scholars to understand the e*pression and content better and to use them respectively in the right places. It has many classifications, such as literary stylistics, traditional stylistics, functional stylistics, etc.
Nevertheless, there are few studies considering the rather particular kind of speech: speeches dealing with the crises delivered by the leaders, let alone the researches associated with the stylistics characteristics. The research samples are all from the speeches delivered by Obama and Hu Jin-Tao. And the analysis will abide by the steps of description—— interpretation——evaluation just as Michael Short(1984), the English Linguist mentioned in his work Who is Stylistics. Thus, specific e*amples will be selected from the te*t to elaborate the stylistic features.

This is the information age, and those who are good at getting their meaning across among people are more likely to be successful. Communicating effectively with the others is getting more and more important. Hence, by analyzing the stylistics characteristics of the public speeches, the author hopes that the thesis would in some way benefit the English learners and contributes to their effective communication in their daily life.
